Le Camping was invited to attend Go Youth Conference on March 14th in the beautiful city of Lisbon. A great opportunity for us to gain some insights into the Portuguese startup ecosystem, and meet our local partners...

If you haven't heard a lot about Portuguese start-ups yet... well that's about to change!

Don’t get me wrong, you are not looking at the famous Golden Gate Bridge. This is Ponte de 25 Abril, that looks exactly the same, but is located in the beautiful city of Lisbon.

You might not have heard a lot about Portuguese start-ups - well, let me tell you that it will change. Even if the acceleration ecosystem is still very young & humble, an accelerator like Beta-i knows how to attract international start-ups.

Ricardo is travelling around the world to promote the portuguese eco-system and attract partners.

Beta-i is an accelerator that is organizing the Lisbon challenge, a four month programme that brings together mentors from companies such as Google. We met up with Ricardo Marvao, who is currently the co-founder and member of the Board at Beta-i.

He’s travelling around the world to promote the Portuguese eco-system and attract partners, investors, and of course start-ups. And it bears fruit: A big part of the applications he received  come from international start-ups from Brasilia, Tel Aviv, Eastern European countries, etc.

Another great argument that might convince you to make the journey: Portugal has great engineering and design talent with the same quality as Silicon Valley... but at a quarter of the price.

People here kickstart, celebrate and promote the start-up world.

We also had the opportunity to visit Dock38, a young co-working space, where the selected start-ups find original benefits. "We provide healthcare, a gym, a kitchen with healthy food only"… explained Tiaguo Rodrigues, the "Right Brain" who introduced us the co-working space to us. It was also a great occasion to meet with the really nice Fabernovel's team in Lisbon.

All of these players in this dynamic ecosystem are confident about Portugal’s startup talent and its ability to build great companies. Indeed, young Portuguese people are hungry and motivated to make things happen. People here kickstart, celebrate and promote the start-up world.

The same atmosphere in Paris, 3 years ago

In a way, it reminds us that Paris had exactly the same atmosphere three years ago. At this time, Numa did not exist, there was no accelerator and a very few incubators. How did we manage to make it happen in Paris?

Thanks to the precious help of people that already iterated this model in their own country, before us. And this is part of our mission: to help emerging ecosystems to grow and to share our knowledge and best practices.

"Our goal is not only to focus on our own ecosystem and to be one-track minded but also to help empower other actors all over the globe", says Elise Nebout, Le Camping Manager.

This mentality is now expanding globally and becoming a type of positive virus!

This is the magic of entrepreneurship and this is where it takes its real and powerful meaninglies (it’s not just about helping isolated startups, it’s about helping people empower their lives and begin to believe it’s possible - even the situation is not that easy).

Moreover, this is the core DNA of the startup philosophy born in Silicon Valley 10 years ago: this mentality is now expanding globally and becoming a type of positive virus! Yes we can. And the most interesting thing is that the whole ecosystem does it in its own way; each has his own topics, qualities, added value and culture.
